What's wrong with fast fashion?
•Sustainability: Did you know the fashion industry produces 92 million tons of textile waste every year? It's the third most polluting industry in the world, after energy and agriculture. Fast fashion garments aren't made to last which means they're worn briefly and then discarded. All but a small percentage of these discarded textiles are either sent to landfills in the US or shipped abroad where they're often burned because there simply isn't space for them.
•Ethics: Fast fashion production is notoriously unethical. Companies outsource labor to countries with little to no protection for workers, and rely on exploitative cheap labor, often by women and children. Not only are these workers horribly underpaid, sweatshop conditions are inhumane, unhygienic, and dangerous. "Cheap" fashion always comes at a cost.
Why slow fashion?
Fast fashion is fueled by our habits of overconsumption. What's the antidote? Well, we can consume less. And when we do make purchases, we can do so as conscientiously as possible.
All Claire de Lune garments and accessories are sewn from carefully sourced upcycled, thrifted, vintage, or deadstock fabric, and made with a focus on sustainability and intentionality. Each piece is unique and made to last (for details on garment care, see FAQ). Thanks for shopping small and sustainably!
